Question 1. Why do you specialise in acoustically transparent screens when most screen manufacturers offer it only as an option?

We focus on acoustically transparent screens because our primary market is residential home cinema, as well as film and sound production/post-production studios.

When you watch a movie, at least the centre loudspeaker should be placed directly behind the screen and aligned with the middle of the image. This improves realism and is equally important for concert videos or immersive media.

Question 2. Why are so many home theatres installed with solid (non-transparent) screens?

It’s true that many installations use a solid screen, but that setup isn’t ideal from an acoustic perspective.

A movie aims to immerse viewers in the action — sound and image should feel like one experience. To achieve this, the audio must appear to originate from the visible objects on the screen, and the sound and picture must be synchronised in time.

In commercial cinemas, you’ll find the main speakers located behind the screen for this reason — it’s a practice recognised and used by professionals for decades.

Question 3. Are there any drawbacks to using acoustically transparent screens?

The only real drawback is that acoustically transparent screens tend to cost more than solid screens.

However, in a typical home theatre budget, the screen normally represents only a small percentage of the overall project cost.

Most people who compare installations find that once you experience a properly set-up AT (acoustically transparent) screen — with the three front speakers correctly positioned and lip-sync properly adjusted — you won’t want to go back to a non-transparent screen.

This was a concern in the past with older perforated screens.

Modern woven acoustically transparent screens have solved these issues. The benefits of placing the left, centre and right speakers behind the screen far outweigh any previous limitations. Modern woven surfaces deliver high-quality audio and video without audible or visible compromise.
